Rescue workers Wednesday dug through tons of mud in California caused by a rainstorm that killed at least 22 people and forced the closing of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has caused an estimated $100 million in damage. The S&W Cafeteria in Charlotte closes today. No S&W Cafeterias will be left in the Carolinas. The one in Asheville closed Dec. 31. Other cafeterias at one time were located in Durham, Greensboro and Raleigh. Former North Carolina Governors Bob Scott, James Holshouser and Terry Sanford are opposed to the proposed constitutional amendment making the term of state legislators from 2 to 4 years. The Columbus Baptist Church and Horse Creek Lodge are honoring Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gibbs Saturday. They will have a covered dish supper Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Columbus Baptist Church. The Gibbs will move to South Boston, Va. in February (Continued On Back Page) Democrat Leader To Speak Here Tim Reese of the State Democratic Headquarters in Raleigh will speak to the Polk County Dmocratic Executive Committee and the Precinct members on Thursday, Jan. 14th at 7:30 p.m. He will talk on “Rally Around The Precinct.” Tryon Firemen Elect Officers The Tryon Volunteer Firemen elected officers for 1982 Wednesday night. Clarence Scoggins was re-elected Chief. Other officers elected were: Roy Williams, Assistant Chief; Jimmy Lankford, Captain; Rudy Hudson, Lieutenant; Roger Edwards, Secretary-Treasurer. Meets Tuesday The Thrift-y Garden Club will meet Tuesday, January 12th at 3 o’clock with Mrs. Hazel Young. Mrs. Nettie Daniel will be co hostesses. The program will be Musical Flowers by Gaye Young. Hospital Board Meets Tuesday The Board of Trustees of St. Luke's Hospital will meet Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Medical Library. Won’t Run For Re-Election M. Leonard Lowe M. Leonard Lowe, District Attorney for the 29th Judicial District has announced that he will not be a candidate for re- election. Lowe who is senior District Attorney in the State, having been elected in 1958 states; “I will have full retirement after this term and I plan to return to private practice in Rutherford County.” In making his announcement Lowe stated that he wanted to thank the voters of the Twenty- ninth Judicial District for having elected him to this position of trust for the last twenty-four years. I have made many friends throughout the district and I am sure that the people of this district are the finest in the state. I especially want to thank my staff. I have heard many Continued On Back Page Memorial Fund For J. H. Wiggins Mrs. Hazel Wiggins, has received notification of the establishment of The John Hamilton Wiggins Memorial Fund at Campbell University, by the North Carolina Women in Law Enforcement, an organization of women who are engaged in law enforcement in the state of North Carolina. Mr. Wiggins was appointed Postmaster for the Town of Tryon in August of 1974 where he served until his death in 1977. Tesfa Workeneh, a refugee from Communist regime in his native Ethiopia has been awarded the Scholarship for the coming year. Mr. Workeneh is preparing for a teaching and preaching ministry and plans to return to Ethiopia as a full time Christian witness. Ms. Lenora Topp of Asheville was chairman of the committee who worked on the establishment of the scholarship. Town Council Meets Monday The Tryon Town Council will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall.
